A positively charged clip is connected to the tested jewelry while the metal plate under the strip is negatively charged. When the tested jewelry comes in contact with the impregnated test strip gold atoms are transferred to the strip. There will be no reaction to other metals. The amount of gold transferred to the strip is minuscule. How to test if an item is solid gold or plated: At Test Position touch the edge of the jewelry to the strip hold it for 2-3 seconds and then slide it slowly across the test strip. If the jewelry is gold between 9 - 24K a visible light-brownish line will continue all the way across the strip. If the jewelry is gold-plated you will see only a very small brownish spot or short line. The length of the line will depend on the thickness of the plating. Pure gold and high karat gold will leave a beautiful orange-yellow colored line. 18 karat and under will leave a brownish line and a dark brown line will show for the lower grades.
