Welsh writer Tyvian Jones (Stanley Baker) seems to have it all, Sixties style -- an international best seller, an apartment in Rome, a gorgeous fianc+ªe in Virna Lisi - but he's bitter anyway. Decked out in pointy pumps and heavy eyeliner, listening to Billie Holiday on scratchy LPs as she counts the lire and smokes endless packs of cigarettes in strangers' bedrooms, she is the epitome of frayed glamour. An emotional tyrant, Eve's casual maneuvering forces Baker to confront his past - and his weaknesses - as a man and an artist. With the Hakim brothers (the notorious producers of The Long Night, Purple Noon & Belle De Jour) handed Losey a fat contract and a pulp potboiler (by James Hadley Chase), Losey was sure it was his break. After years of tightly budgeted British programmers, he hoped Eva would be his ticket to the glossy world of the international cinema. But while Losey's final cut was hailed by critics as equal to his materpiece The Servant, it was barely released and remains largely unseen after more than 30 years. Losey disowned the producers' version, 15 minutes shorter than his own. Recently released in its entirelty for the first time in the U.S. by Kino International, Losey's original verison of Eva (entitled Eve), which he described as almost an orgasm, is also included on this DVD. The only surviving print of the longer version is a Swedish/Finnish release print preserved by the British Film Institute. It is through the efforts if the BFI that Kino is able to present this version on DVD, with Swedish and Finnish subtitles and English dialogue.

On the 17th of September 1996 a young woman, accompanied by a few dozen family and friends, attended her own tribute concert in a small club in the Washington, DC area. Transcending the effects of chemotherapy and morphine in that moment, the singer abandoned her walker and was helped onto the stage for what would be her final performance, What a Wonderful World. A few weeks later Eva Cassidy passed away, having been diagnosed with melanoma months earlier. Refusing to bend her music to the industry s conventions and expectations, Eva was known only within the DC area during her lifetime. She left behind one live album, a duet album, and various studio demos and live recordings. In these intervening 16 years, Eva's music has proven timeless and universal. Crossing all boundaries-musical, cultural, geographical-her voice survived and is finding new listeners every day in every corner of the earth. Released on the eve of what would have been her 50th birthday these twenty performances document Eva Cassidy's musical legacy for the ages.

UK collection from the beloved American singer/songwriter whose music finally reached a large audience four years after her death. In the 17 years since her passing, Eva's musical gift to the world is contained in her nine album catalog. The Best Of Eva Cassidy contains 19 tracks taken from those nine albums plus a belated surprise in the form of a previously unreleased version of You Take My Breath Away, recorded shortly before Eva left us in 1996 but never heard until now. A 'demo' version of You Take My Breath Away concluded Eva's UK #1 album American Tune but this alternative interpretation takes the song to new emotional heights. Having dusted off and re-mastered Eva's original guitar/vocal studio recording, her former band mates Chris Biondo and Lenny Williams then augmented the production with new bass guitar, piano and string arrangements to create the definitive version of what's certain to become one of Eva's best-loved performances.

Eva Cassidy's story is a sad one, certainly, but the bittersweet happy ending to it all is that her singing, music, and recordings continue to live on and gather fans and admirers even after her early death from melanoma cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. Simply Eva is another collection of posthumous Eva Cassidy recordings, but with a twist: all but one of these performances was recorded with the artist accompanying herself solely, with an acoustic guitar -- either in Chris Biondo's studio or in front of club audiences between 1993-1996.
