HIGH AND FAST is the third in a series about Dario D’Angelo—who went for Naval Aviator Wings because they were Girl Magnets. Although it stands alone as a novel, it does continue Dario’s Naval Aviation escapades of the prior novels LOW AND SLOW and FLIGHT SONG. In this novel he is flying out of United States Naval Air Station Capodichino, in Naples, Italy. In his assignment there, he serves with old acquaintances and becomes friends with local Italians. Faced with personal tragedy, he is driven by the “vendetta” standard of his Italian background instilled in him by his father, which is quite contrary to Naval Regulations. The book ends with closure. The author entered the then new Aviation Officer Candidate Program in 1956 and flew the T-34, T-28B, T-28C, and SNJ-5 in Basic Flight Training and the AD-4 in Advance. In fleet squadrons, he flew four models of the AD-5. He made cruises to the Western Pacific aboard the USS LEXINGTON (CVA-16) and the USS ORISKANY (CVA-34). Leaving active duty in 1961, he worked as a representative of United Services and spent seven years in Europe. During that time, as an active reservist, he did duty at Rota, Spain; Naples, Italy; Stuttgart, Germany; and London, England. He retired from the reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1973 he earned an FAA Airline Transport Pilot rating and entered corporate aviation sales in Santa Barbara. In 1980 he directed the building of Harbor House, Edgewater Grill and Pier Café restaurants and became and remains a partner in these three waterfront restaurants located in San Diego’s Seaport Village. For many years he flew throughout Baja California, Mexico, in pursuit of game fish. His book of stories, The Escapades of Captain Baja, is a result of those experiences. He has almost 5,000 hours of hands on, single pilot flight time in single and multi-engine aircraft, as well as gliders. He is proud that he ended his flying career with an equal number of takeoffs and landings and all aircraft were re-useable, having never had an accident—not even a blown tire!
