GREAT HANDEL ARIAS SET IN CONTEMPORARY LONDON BY NIGHT: A PERFORMANCE-BASED FILMHandel is a thoroughly modern composer whose genius for expressing human emotions is undimmed by time. This performance-based film, A Night With Handel, stylishly dramatizes some of the composer s most beautiful arias, linked together over the course of one night in present-day London. Presented by Handel biographer Jonathan Keates, the arias are specially recorded by world-class singers, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Handel had a genius for dramatic expression in music which belies the stuffy or artificial image with which both the man and his work are often imagined. The simple emotions Handel portrayed - love, betrayal, the desire for vengeance - these have not changed since his time, and neither has the ability of his music to move an audience. An enthusiastic faith in this modernity, in the enduring quality of Handel's work, made us want to present the arias in this film in correspondingly modern settings.
