The popularity of NBA Street has attracted a new neighbor in NFL Street, an urban-themed football title distinguished by its players, venues, and rules. Rather than select from traditional athletes armored in pads and helmets, players can choose from 300 NFL pros dressed in street attire and ready to show off a wild assortment of exaggerated moves. The game offers seven-on-seven action taking place on seven distinct "fields," including a beach, park, corner lot, and other offbeat locales, each with varying terrain and dimensions. The street theme means players won't have to worry about penalties, kicking field goals, or punting the ball away. Before proving their mettle on the asphalt, mud, or sand, players can select a Pick-Up Game, NFL Challenge, or a Create-A-Team option. Pick-Up Game has players assembling their team, playground style, by picking and choosing from a pool of 40 randomly selected NFL athletes from the past and present. NFL Challenge has players competing against each of the 32 professional teams until they are crowned champion, while Create-A-Team involves developing an athlete and squad from scratch. NFL Street follows a similar structure to NBA Street, in that players accumulate points by performing outlandish moves and trick plays. Amassing a certain number of points activates a Gamebreaker mode, which enhances an athlete's abilities and makes it harder for the opposing side to shut down a play. Created athletes can also earn development points by winning games, which can be traded in for new clothing, equipment, physical attributes, and more. Up to four players can tackle each other on the same screen, with online support available in the PlayStation 2 version.

Visual Concepts created a huge stir with the original NFL 2K--the first football video game that actually looked like you were watching a game on TV. NFL 2K2, the third game in the series, still features the mind-boggling graphics, stunning player animations, and great play modes of the original. And, despite an often frustrating passing engine, it's still one of the best sports simulations around. You can play as any NFL team in a variety of modes: practice, tourney, exhibition, season, playoffs, franchise, fantasy, tutorial, and network (against up to seven other players nationwide). The franchise mode is again one of the game's strengths, as it offers a variety of scouting and free agency options, letting you customize your roster as a general manager based on the statistics and financial demands of actual players. Now you can learn what the Washington Redskins already know--the salary cap is a cruel mistress. The player animations are again the star of the show. There are literally dozens of potential endings to any collision in NFL 2K2, from stumbling five yards after a shoestring tackle to spinning dizzily between two linebackers to somersaulting through the air after stretching for a catch over the middle. And, although the tackles can be spectacular, the game doesn't betray its simulation roots by making them too extreme. These aren't torn from the comics pages, as in some games. Sega Sports has talked up its new passing system quite a bit, and it is both challenging and intriguing--perfect for the hard-core simulation expert. Unfortunately, the rest of us are left struggling to complete 5 to 10 passes a game. Essentially, the game asks players to expertly anticipate routes and time the receiver's catch. This is no easy task in a fast-moving game such as this, as receivers routinely drop wide-open passes on the rare occasions

Look no further than Sega Sports' NFL 2K3 if you're seeking a more than worthy alternative to the established Madden football franchise. The game's superb graphics alone are enough to draw in any fan, but its in-depth gameplay realism and ESPN broadcast presentation easily rank this as the finest football game Sega has released to date. Thanks to its smarter-than-average artificial intelligence, NFL 2K3 sports a somewhat steep learning curve that requires sound football simulation instincts. Knowing your team's strengths and weaknesses will ultimately be a big help if you hope to win at the game's advanced levels. Be prepared to mix up your play calling and make adjustments instead of thinking the same old reliable plays will get the job done. Of course, practice mode is always there if you need to work the kinks out of your game plan and master the multitude of offensive and defensive sets at your disposal. Graphically, sports games don't come much better looking than NFL 2K3. Among the highlights: player animations are amazingly realistic and lifelike, and a wide array of facial emotions appear that are relative to game scenarios; stadiums are painstakingly re-created to take on almost postcardlike feel; and replays access a wide variety of angles to put you right on the field or in the stands. One area in which NFL 2K3 easily aces Madden is its game commentary. As part of the game's ESPN broadcast presentation, announcers Dan Stevens and Peter O'Keefe call every bit of the action in varied detail. Their comments are far removed from stale Maddenisms, offering worthwhile play breakdowns, player assessments, and quips that don't make you wince in disgust (at least not too often). Stevens and O'Keefe, along with the crowd, will let you hear about it when you bite it on the fi
