    "Next to Useless"

    by am01 on December 8, 2006

Pros: A nice easy to use, small media-less recorder

Cons: Has almost no editing capabilities, low res photos

Summary: I must first of all say I am disappointed with the editors review, which I largely based my decision on purchasing this camera on.
I only need a camera for home movies, sending home movies to grandparents, etc, so wasn't put off by the fact that the picture quality was only average.
What nobody mentioned was that this camera has almost no editing capabilities, due to the fact that it records in MPEG2 format. The computer software that is bundled with it, gives basic, and I mean BASIC editing capability. There is no provision for transitions, title pages, picture quality tweaking, or even stringing all your recordings into one movie. You can only create a menu with separate chapters for each recording, and within those chapters you can delete what you don't want. There is text editing in the menu only.
SO, unless you are happy to watch your raw, unedited dvds for ever and a day, this camera is useless. Wish I'd been warned.

i find this soooo funny... does he really think they will give you $700 adobe after effects with a $500 camera? that is what disappoints him? and of course the film quality is average... duh.. this isnt a high end $2000 camera or anything.. which also probably doesnt come with editing software... and sure the mpeg 2 format isnt the most comfortable.. but it can easily be converted... it just shows the ignorance of some people

You can edit MPEG 2 with any off the shelf software. Try ULead Videostudio 11.0.

I wish someone had warned me about the Pana. Lumix Camera I bought that has NO sound on the Movie Mode and records its movies only in Quicktime, Windows hates Quicktime.

So, software is your only complaint? Come on. You can't go spend $50 for a good video editing software?

Hey what kind of software is everyone using to edit the video from these hard drive camcorders? I use Adobe Premiere and have never had a problem editing with that software. Am I missing something here cause I really like these camcorders but don't like the reviews. Thanks
