NEW Up - Up: 3d (2011) (blu-ray) (Blu-ray)
NEW Up - Up: 3d (2011) (blu-ray) (Blu-ray)
At a time when too many animated films consist of anthropomorphized animals cracking sitcom one-liners and flatulence jokes, the warmth, originality, humor, and unflagging imagination of Up feel as welcome as rain in a desert. Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) ranks among the most unlikely heroes in recent animation history. A 78- year-old curmudgeon, he enjoyed his modest life as a balloon seller because he shared it with his adventurous wife Ellie (Ellie Docter). But she died, leaving him with memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats to South America. The journey's scarcely begun when he discovers a stowaway: Russell (Jordan Nagai), a chubby, maladroit Wilderness Explorer Scout who's out to earn his Elderly Assistance Badge. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for: Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin, an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug (Bob Peterson), an endearingly dim golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, the travelers discover they need each other: Russell needs a (grand)father figure; Carl needs someone to enliven his life without Ellie. Together, they learn that sharing ice-cream cones and counting the passing cars can be more meaningful than feats of daring-do and distant horizons. Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc. ) and Bob Peterson direct the film with consummate skill and taste, allowing the poignant moments to unfold without dialogue to Michael Giacchnio's vibrant score. Building on their work in The Incredibles and Ratatouille, the Pixar crew offers nuanced animation of the stylized characters. Even by Pixar's elevated standards, Up is an exceptional film that will appeal of audiences of all ages. Rated PG for some peril and action. --Charles SolomonStills from Up (Click for larger image)

Monster House 3D Blu-ray Disc
Monster House 3D Blu-ray Disc
MONSTER HOUSE is a feat of blockbusting filmmaking--a visually stunning witty tale that is sure to stimulate children and their parents. The film focuses on an anthropomorphic mansion a haunted house with human characteristics that actively frightens neighborhood folks as it attempts to reign over its inhabitants. One day a trio of intrepid youngsters sick of being terrorized decide to fight back. They are cutely pubescent DJ Mitchel Musso; his fumbling chubby friend Chowder Sam Lerner; and smart-as-a-whip tomboy Jenny Spencer Locke who immediately enchants the awkward boys. The local police are no help so DJ Chowder and Jenny are left to their own clever devices which result in a series of rollicking hilarious and sometimes scary adventures. A cast of colorful personalities surrounds the central characters and they are voiced by luminaries who include Catherine O'Hara Kevin James Maggie Gyllenhaal Kathleen Turner Steve Buscemi and the brilliant Fred Willard. And teen hipsters will delight in hearing the droll voice of Jon Heder the title character of cult hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE as a deadbeat pizza maker nicknamed "Skull." First-time director Gil Kenan proves spirited and highly adept at mastering such a high-tech production and followers of animation will want to pay attention to the use of new digital techniques that stray away from straightforward computer drawing. MONSTER HOUSE is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis who helmed the innovative and sophisticated animated feature WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? in 1988. He once again proves that family fare need not be alienating to older viewers but can appeal to on every level from childhood and upward.

Megamind 3D Blu-ray/DVD
Notorious Metro City villian Megamind voice of Will Ferrell becomes an unlikely savior to the troubled metropolis after defeating beloved do-gooder Metro Man voice of Brad Pitt and creating a new opponent who refuses to play by the rules. Megamind was only an infant when his parents loaded him into an emergency escape pod and jettisoned him into space just as their planet was being sucked into a black hole. His destination: planet Earth. Meanwhile another slightly more wholesome baby sets out on the same trajectory. But while the latter will ultimately land in the home of a wealthy couple and grow up to become Metro Man hero of Metro City poor Megamind finds his fate taking the opposite course when his pod crashes in a prison yard leaving him to be raised by convicts. Later in grade school the kids all flock to Metro Man leaving a frustrated Megamind to embrace a life of diabolical misdeeds. As the years go by Metro Man and Megamind develop an intense adversarial relationship that pits them in battle over Metro City time and again. Undeterred by his unbroken losing streak Megamind hatches an ingenious scheme to finally destroy Metro Man by kidnapping pretty reporter Roxanne Ritchi voice of Tina Fey and luring the predictable hero into a deadly trap. Then something unexpected happens -- Megamind's plan actually works. Now with Metro Man out of the picture Megamind and his Minion voice of David Cross stake their claim on Metro City. But what good is ultimate power when you don't even have to fight for it? Realizing that life is simply out of balance without Metro Man to be the hero Megamind creates a new foe who will be just as righteous and powerful as his fallen adversary. Unfortunately Megamind's schemes usually have a way of backfiring and when Metro City's newest savior proves even more evil than Megamind the blue-hued antihero prepares to fight back with everything he's got.
