In the 1930s, George Soule of Freeport, Maine, developed the first cork decoys. He then took the design one step further and increased the size of the decoys, making them easier for ducks to see from long distances. In addition, their realistic appearance and motion fooled even the wariest ducks. Today, Soule's decoys are still considered some of the finest and most effective ever made. 2011 marks the 75th anniversary of the Coastal Decoy's first appearance in an L.L.Bean catalog. We are proud to present this special collector's edition of Soule's Mallard Drake Coastal Decoy. Each decoy is carved using Soule's original master, then handpainted in fine detail and signed by award-winning decoy-maker Steve Brettell. Brettell was one of Soule's good friends and has been carving and painting decoys for over 25 years. He brings each decoy to life with skill and attention to each feather.
