The remarkable thing about Rent the movie is that nearly 10 years after the show debuted on Broadway, six of the eight principals return in the roles they originated. They're a bit older than would be ideal for their characters, but they do have the advantage of having learned the show directly from creator Jonathan Larson (who died of an aortic aneurysm while the show was in previews), plus they started young--we're not exactly talking Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford here. Alongside a polished performance like Rapp's--sometimes observer-commentator, sometimes participant in two of the score's showstoppers, The Tango Maureen and La Vie Boheme--the two new additions (Thoms in place of Fredi Walker, Dawson in place of the edgier Daphne Rubin-Vega) slip comfortably into the ensemble; the pivotal Dawson makes a seductive case as Mimi when she tempts Roger in the mesmerizing Light My Candle or burns up the stage of the Catscratch Club in Out Tonight. Moviegoers who have an aversion to people who break into song while walking down the street probably won't have their minds changed by Rent (even if they are singing rock songs), and the gritty subject matter and lack of big-name stars make it unlikely to cross over to general audiences the way Chicago did. But fans of musicals should find Seasons of Love as stirring as ever, and the show's passionate admirers--the Rentheads--probably couldn't have wished for a more sympathetic director than Rent fan Chris Columbus, or a more faithful representation of the show they love. --David Horiuchi

Opening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which you were never sure which adults you could trust--William Sadleir trod a fine line of ambiguity as the local sheriff and Julie Benz was silkily sinister as an FBI agent. As the new head of a hospital for the poor, he builds a body for his crippled assistant from parts amputated from his patients, but body battles mind for supremacy and turns the newly ambulatory man into a bloodthirsty cannibal. Once again Fisher makes the most of a constricted budget, turning his poorhouse hospital into a cramped, dank hole and splurging on another colorful laboratory of buzzing devices and a centerpiece tank for his suspended creature. There are few innocents in the Frankenstein films and this is no different: high-society dandies are hypocrites, poorhouse patients thieves and opportunists, and of course the driven doctor is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to achieve his goal. The clever conclusion, which lays the groundwork for the next sequel, was curiously ignored when the third installment finally arrived six years later in The Evil of Frankenstein. --Sean Axmaker

One Night in Turin tells the tale of England s soccer team and the nation s journey from despair to hope. It intimately depicts the leading characters, star players Paul Gascoigne and Chris Waddle, manager Bobby Robson, and team captain Terry Butcher in a celebration of soccer and how it changed the hearts and minds of a whole country. It was Spring 1990, and the London streets were filled with poll tax rioters. England was being crushed by civil strife in the midst of a recession, plus the struggles of an internationally unpopular premier soccer league. While in the meantime, the rest of the world was waking up to a new dawn, the Berlin Wall had fallen, Mandela walked free from prison, and the Soviet Union was in its death throes. The Italia World Cup of 1990 came just in time to celebrate this new world order. The West Germans arrived as favorites to play for the last time as a divided nation, and reigning champions Argentina were led by the pantomime villain Maradona. England was the one guest no one wanted to invite to the party. Over the course of the next six weeks, however, England s small band of brothers led by the reinvigorated Bobby Robson and the brilliant Gascoigne, overcame scandal, political intrigue and even the mighty Dutch. They reached the semi-finals in Turin, home of the Juventus team, and the place in Europe that had the most reason to hate the English after the Heysel disaster of '85 in which 39 Italian and Belgian fans were killed by a stampede of English Liverpool supporters. It is there that they must attempt to overcome the fierce Germans and where success of their mission would depend not on the number of goals scored, but whether the team and their fans could show the world a new face of Englishness.

Later on Earth a Boy Scout troop is visiting an aquarium to visit the scientists working on a small two-man submarine. Masao and Jim, two of the scouts manage to talk their way aboard the sub. While in the water they spot Gamera - who engages in a little race with the boys. However, their hijinks come to an end when the second alien vessel envelops the both of them in a super-catch ray. Releasing the boys, Gamera remains trapped in the force field while the aliens scan his memory-waves. They learn of Gamera one weakness, his love for children. Soon after, the field weakens and Gamera is free. The aliens capture Jim and Masao, threatening to kill the boys. Powerless, Gamera lands. Attaching a brain-wave control device to Gamera's head, the aliens force Gamera to do their bidding.While aboard the spaceship, the boys continually try to escape. Gamera, however (under the influence of the Virians) is destroying dams and cities by the handful. Tim and Masao meet a strange squid like creature, thinking it is actually another captive of the aliens. In fact it is Viras, the leader of the aliens. The boys help Gamera break from the brain-wave device, and he begins to attack the spaceship. Grounded by Gamera, the aliens reveal that their humanoid forms were just hosts for more squid-like aliens. The aliens form together making a Gamera-sized creature, Viras! The two duke it out in a big beachside battle.
