Amelie DVD
Amelie DVD
Amlie Poulain Audrey Tautou is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin she sees the world in a magical light discovering minor miracles every day. A shy and reserved person whose favorite moments are spent alone skimming stones into the water Amlie was raised by a pair of eccentrics who falsely diagnosed her with a heart problem at the age of six and so limited her exposure to the outside world. Now a free and independent woman Amlie wears a bob that curls in every direction and dresses in red. With a job in a caf and an aptitude for spying on her neighbors Amlie entertains herself by enacting a series of homemade kindhearted practical jokes. She returns a long-forgotten box of childhood knickknacks to its proper owner she sends her father's garden troll on a trip around the world and she creates a love connection at the caf between the hypochondriac druggist and a beer-drinking old grouch. But when the day is done Amlie finds one stone unturned and decides to work her magic on the quirky object of her affections Nino Quincampoix Matthieu Kassovitz whom she has never met. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet who codirected DELICATESSEN and THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN with Marc Caro presents AMLIE an aesthetically gorgeous and inventive film. The rich glowing color scheme is offset by flashbacks in black and white archival footage that give short biographies of each character. A soft-spoken narrator guides viewers through this enlightening fairy tale which sometimes speeds through the streets and other times drifts in slow motion. AMLIE is humorous questioning and strange and it will change the lives of all who watch it if only for a short while after leaving Amlie's world.

Crime After Crime
Crime After Crime
Deborah Peagler was just fifteen years old when she met Oliver Wilson, a charming man several years her senior. They began dating, and Peagler learned that Wilson was a pimp when he asked her to turn tricks for him. When she said no, he responded with violence, and thus began an ugly and abusive relationship that went on for years. After Peagler learned that Wilson had molested their six-year-old daughter, she turned to two men she knew in hopes they would help free her from Wilson. However, their confrontation turned violent and Wilson ended up dead. Peagler was charged with first-degree murder for her role in Wilson's death, even though she only witnessed the beating and the killing was not premeditated; incorrectly told she was facing the death penalty, Peagler pled guilty on the advice on a public defender who never asked her about the abuse that led to the crime. Peagler was sentenced to twenty-five years to life, but in 2000, after seventeen years behind bars, California passed a law that offered consideration in cases of battered women who killed their abusers. The law would seem tailor-made for a case like Peagler's, but when a pair of attorneys volunteered to take on her case, they were soon trapped in a labyrinth of broken promises, legal double-talk and official corruption as they dealt with the California court system and the Los Angeles District Attorney's office. Filmmaker Yoav Potash chronicles the true story of Deborah Peagler and the battle to win her freedom in the documentary Crime After Crime. The film received its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, several months prior to its television debut on Oprah Winfrey's OWN cable network. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Rent
Rent
Rent, the show that in 1996 gave voice to a Broadway generation, has finally become an energetic, passionate, and touching movie musical. Based loosely on Puccini's La Bohème, it focuses on the year in the life of a group of friends in New York's East Village--bohemians who live carefree lives of art, music, sex, and drugs. Well, carefree until Mark, an aspiring filmmaker (Anthony Rapp), and Roger, an aspiring songwriter (Adam Pascal), find out they owe a year's rent to Benny (Taye Diggs), a former friend who had promised them free residence when he married the landlord's daughter. Roger has also attracted the attention of his downstairs neighbor, Mimi (Rosario Dawson), while Mark's former girlfriend, Maureen (Idina Menzel), has found a new romance in a lawyer named Joanne (Tracie Thoms). Philosophy professor Tom (Jesse L. Martin) finds his soul mate in drag queen Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia). But because this is the late-'80s, the threat of AIDS is always present. The remarkable thing about Rent the movie is that nearly 10 years after the show debuted on Broadway, six of the eight principals return in the roles they originated. They're a bit older than would be ideal for their characters, but they do have the advantage of having learned the show directly from creator Jonathan Larson (who died of an aortic aneurysm while the show was in previews), plus they started young--we're not exactly talking Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford here. Alongside a polished performance like Rapp's--sometimes observer-commentator, sometimes participant in two of the score's showstoppers, The Tango Maureen and La Vie Boheme--the two new additions (Thoms in place of Fredi Walker, Dawson in place of the edgier Daphne Rubin-Vega) slip comfortably into the ensemble; the pivotal Dawson makes a seductive case as Mimi when she tempts Roger in the mesmerizing Light My Candle or burns up the stage of the Catscratch Club in Out Tonight. Moviegoers who have an aversion to people who break into song while walking down the street probably won't have their minds changed by Rent (even if they are singing rock songs), and the gritty subject matter and lack of big-name stars make it unlikely to cross over to general audiences the way Chicago did. But fans of musicals should find Seasons of Love as stirring as ever, and the show's passionate admirers--the Rentheads--probably couldn't have wished for a more sympathetic director than Rent fan Chris Columbus, or a more faithful representation of the show they love. --David Horiuchi

Roswell
Roswell
Opening with a Dido theme song and featuring character-driven, sweet-natured melodrama, Roswell was a show with a surprisingly dedicated fandom, who twice won it reprieve from cancellation. One of its main strengths was, of course, the extent to which its premise--alien teenagers trying to sort out their identities while emotionally involved with their human contemporaries--was a free-floating metaphor for race and sexuality issues. Another was the strong ensemble that its cast developed: you believed in the strangeness of the alien trio and the well-intentioned normality of their three human friends. Jason Behr gave the alien Max a quiet authority and Majendra Delfino took the sidekick role of Maria and gave it both intensity and fine comic timing. It was also a show in which you were never sure which adults you could trust--William Sadleir trod a fine line of ambiguity as the local sheriff and Julie Benz was silkily sinister as an FBI agent. Anyone who ever loved this show will want these DVDs--and many others may want to find out what the fuss was about. Roswell is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. The special features include commentaries on six episodes by writer Jason Katims, the directors, and various cast members as well as a featurette on the making of the show and another on its adaptation from the original Roswell High series of young adult novels. The commentaries are unusually insightful on the casting process, and the discs also include the auditions for the part of Tess as well as a deleted scene and a music video. --Roz Kaveney

Hydrogen Hawaii
Hydrogen Hawaii
HYDROGEN HAWAII, with Dr. Tom Koppel, author of 'Powering the Future - The Ballard Fuel Cell and the Race to Change the World,' tells a larger hydrogen economy story, said Scientific American's Fuel Cell Industry Report. Produced and directed by independent filmmaker Richard D. Masters at the request of Hawaii's Energy and Environmental Protection Chair, Representative Mina Morita, HYDROGEN HAWAII examines the rich potential of Hawaii to become free of total oil dependence by tapping the islands' abundance of renewable energy - and create a model for the conversion of the mainland to a hydrogen economy. Produced in the year of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center, HYDROGEN HAWAII is a prophetic exploration of America's key national security issue: a dangerous reliance on imported petroleum. The latest developments in hydrogen energy are covered in detail. Fuel cell buses in Canada; political discussions in Washington, D.C., and a bold government initiative to bring fuel cell cars to California. Updated for 2003, the delivery of commercial Japanese fuel cell cars to the City of Los Angeles and the University of California presents a profound new challenge to Detroit and OPEC, and fires the first shot of what is destined to become the greatest technological race of the 21st century. Only six weeks after the release of this updated edition, President George W. Bush announced the United States would develop a hydrogen economy to remove itself from the influence of imported oil. HYDROGEN HAWAII provides a unique perspective to this technology and its urgency.Director Richard D. Masters is also principal of the International Clearinghouse for Hydrogen Based Commerce. The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration
The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration
THE GODFATHER: Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather (1972) is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a godfather or don, the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family business. A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels. THE GODFATHER PART II: This brilliant companion piece to the original The Godfather continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Coppola tells two stories in Part II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Al Pacino) as the new Don. Reassembling many of the talents who helped make The Godfather, Coppola has produced a movie of staggering magnitude and vision, and undeniably the best sequel ever made. Robert De Niro won an Oscar®; the film received six Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1974. THE GODFATHER PART III: One of the greatest sagas in movie history continues! In this third film in the epic Corleone trilogy, Al Pacino reprises the role of powerful family leader Michael Corleone. Now in his 60's, Michael is dominated by two passions: freeing his family from crime and finding a suitable successor. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)... but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence. Francis Ford Coppola directs Pacino, Garcia, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Eli Wallach, Sofia Coppola, Joe Montegna and others in this exciting, long-awaited film that masterfully explores the themes of power, tradition, revenge and love. Seven Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture.

One Night in Turin
One Night in Turin
One Night in Turin tells the tale of England s soccer team and the nation s journey from despair to hope. It intimately depicts the leading characters, star players Paul Gascoigne and Chris Waddle, manager Bobby Robson, and team captain Terry Butcher in a celebration of soccer and how it changed the hearts and minds of a whole country. It was Spring 1990, and the London streets were filled with poll tax rioters. England was being crushed by civil strife in the midst of a recession, plus the struggles of an internationally unpopular premier soccer league. While in the meantime, the rest of the world was waking up to a new dawn, the Berlin Wall had fallen, Mandela walked free from prison, and the Soviet Union was in its death throes. The Italia World Cup of 1990 came just in time to celebrate this new world order. The West Germans arrived as favorites to play for the last time as a divided nation, and reigning champions Argentina were led by the pantomime villain Maradona. England was the one guest no one wanted to invite to the party. Over the course of the next six weeks, however, England s small band of brothers led by the reinvigorated Bobby Robson and the brilliant Gascoigne, overcame scandal, political intrigue and even the mighty Dutch. They reached the semi-finals in Turin, home of the Juventus team, and the place in Europe that had the most reason to hate the English after the Heysel disaster of '85 in which 39 Italian and Belgian fans were killed by a stampede of English Liverpool supporters. It is there that they must attempt to overcome the fierce Germans and where success of their mission would depend not on the number of goals scored, but whether the team and their fans could show the world a new face of Englishness.
