Poppy - Iceland - 1/2 LB
Iceland poppy wildflower is not as hardy as its name implies. It is used extensively in the southeast, since a fall seeding will create a lavish spring display, but the plants are unable to live through the hot summer that follows. It is also used as a favorite bedding plant in California. In colder climates, Iceland poppy performs like a perennial for two or three years. Grows from up to about 2 feet and blooms in its first year from Iceland poppy wildflower seed. It has coarse, divided leaves at the base. The fragrant flowers are have a shimmering and lovely form. Available in single or double, and white with yellow, red, orange, rose or apricot markings. This is a short-lived perennial wildflower often grown as an annual. Iceland poppy wild flower seeds should be sown at a temperature of 55 degrees and transplanting seedlings should be done very carefully. Division may be done in mid-spring. All parts of this wildflower seed plant are poisonous.

Ring of Seasons : Iceland--Its Culture and History
A remote island with a rich and ancient literature. A land of hot springs and volcanoes. A country with an extraordinary history, a challenging geography and a vibrant contemporary culture. A land of ice.In Ring of Seasons, Terry Lacy--an American who has lived in Iceland for twenty-four years-- brings both the perspective of the outsider and the familiar eye of the long-term resident to this delightful exploration of all facets of Iceland, past and present. She conveys her story with a skillful interlacing of history, religion, politics, and culture to paint a vivid picture of the way Icelanders live today as members of a wealthy society still very dependent upon nature--from a reliance on her icy waters to support an international fishing industry to a watchful cohabitation with the volcanoes that both destroy villages and create new islands. This is a book for all who have been charmed by reading the Norse sagas, for all those intrigued by the country that can claim the oldest living democracy. It is an excellent introduction for anyone planning to visit Iceland and a delightful read for all those who do their exploration from the comfort of an armchair.Terry G. Lacy is an American currently residing in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The Ghosts of Iceland
This ethnography, uniquely set in contemporary Iceland, takes an in-depth look at the way supernatural beliefs and practices (long an important subject of anthropology) thrive as an "unnamed, unpretentious, and quiet, nearly silent, spiritual movement that impacts most of the population either directly or indirectly in deeply personal ways." The author lived and worked in Reykjavik, where friends, acquaintances, students, colleagues and spirit mediums talked with him about their experiences of being in contact with spirits of the dead, including deceased loved ones and spirit doctors. Anderson's book is a primary example of signature anthropology methodology, i.e., ethnographic fieldwork or participant observation. He spent time with spirit mediums, joined in group seances, observed and recorded conversations between the living and the dead, arranged for spirit doctors to treat sick friends, and attended lectures at spiritist schools, and coffee klatches of the 'spirit society'.

Iceland
An astonishing land of fire and ice, where active volcanoes, hot springs, and lava floes stand beside thundering waterfalls, glaciers, and ice fields in deserted, rocky landscapes, Iceland is home to some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. In this breathtaking volume, photographer Patrick Desgraupes has captured, in 175 original photos taken especially for this book, Iceland's drama and mystery as no other photographer before him ever has. From the sweeping expanses of the island's ocean reaches punctuated by twisted pillars of volcanic rock to sublime panoramas of mountain peaks in the blaze of northern sunsets, the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland's interior spring to life in this remarkable book. The Icelandic essayist Einar Mar Jonsson has written a poetic appreciation of his homeland; and science writer Guillaume Cannat has provided a naturalist's description of the titanic forces that have shaped Iceland through geological time.
