Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Don Siegel, director (Rutgers Films in Print)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Don Siegel, director (Rutgers Films in Print)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) is a low-budget science fiction film that has become a classic. The suspense of the film lies in discovering, along with Miles, the central character (played by Kevin McCarthy), who is "real" and who is not, and whether Miles and Becky (played by Dana Wynter) will escape the pod takeover. As the center of the film moves outward from a small-town group of neighbors to the larger political scene and institutional network (of police, the FBI, hospital workers), the ultimate question is whether "they" have taken over altogether. Although Invasion can be interpreted in interesting ways along psychological and feminist lines, its importance as a text has centered primarily on political and sociological readings. In his introduction to this volume, Al LaValley explores the politics of the original author of the magazine serial story on which the film is based, Don Siegel; and of its screenwriter, Daniel Mainwaring. And he looks at the ways the studio (Allied Artists) tried to neutralize certain readings by tacking on an explanatory frame story. The commentary section includes readings by Stephen King, Peter Biskind, Nora Sayre, and Peter Bogdanovich. A section of postproduction documents reproduced here (many for the first time) includes many written by Wanger and Siegel. The volume also contains two previously unpublished framing scripts written for Orson Welles. For students and individual enthusiasts, the contextual materials are particularly interesting in showing how crucial the postproduction history of a film can be. A filmography and bibliography are also included in the volume. Al LaValley is the director of film studies at Dartmouth. He is the author of many articles on film and editor of Mildred Pierce in the Wisconsin screenplay series.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers 2-Disc Set; Collector's Edition; Lenticular Faceplate DVD
In this remake of the 1956 cult classic terror slowly and silently strikes San Francisco as the city is mysteriously covered by alien spores that produce strangely beautiful flowers. Unbeknownst to the people the flowers are the bearers of alien pods that make a spiderlike webbing that captures their victims as they sleep and replicates their human form. Although they still look human the victims are transformed into emotionless creatures by a strange race of aliens out to consume and control humanity--and only four people are left to stop them. Donald Sutherland stars as Matthew Bennel a Department of Health inspector whose close friend and coworker Elizabeth Driscoll Brooke Adams is overwhelmed by fear and paranoia when she begins to suspect her boyfriend Geoffrey Art Hindle of no longer being human. Together with their friends Jack Jeff Goldblum and Nancy Veronica Cartwright they are out to stop the bizarre alien invasion before they fall victim to the alien pods. Leonard Nimoy costars as Dr. David Kibner a guru psychiatrist who might not be whom he seems. This haunting parable of human paranoia is a creepy glimpse of a city overrun with robotlike yuppies threatening to wipe out all of humankind. Sutherland gives a knockout performance as the leader of the last four humans left in San Francisco in this terrific blend of B-movie science fiction and modern terror.

THIS IS A TRADE PAPERBACK NOVEL, SIZE 6" X 9" In the tradition of THE THING and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. As a Homicide Investigator working the solar system’s most remote outposts, Lieutenant Kyle Tanner has been involved in more criminal investigations and captures than any other in Security Division. He hunts his prey stealthily, tracking them through the trail of victims cast behind, and makes difficult captures when no one else can. He has seen the twisted remains, things that used to be human but are now barely meat. And he’s executed those who have done such horrible deeds. His most recent case takes him to SOLEX One, a power-generating station that orbits precariously near the Sun. Among the fifteen inhabitants is a killer, a disturbed crewman who for some reason has mutilated his victim. But when Tanner arrives and begins the investigation, he’s shocked to learn that this is no ordinary murder. There appears to be no motive for the crime, and no reason for the mutilation after death. But what Tanner doesn’t realize is that something terrifying is amplifying among the station’s personnel ... and if he doesn’t solve the mystery, the result could be the extinction of the human race. THE FURNACE is a locked-room murder mystery, part techno-thriller, part horror, part detective story. Ardath Mayhar, author of over sixty novels, says, “This is a book of great tension, powerful characterization, and gripping action ... THE FURNACE is an old-style locked-room mystery, updated as horror SF. Completely original and compelling. A must-read.” From www.alternative-worlds.com: "This is a great science fiction locked station mystery ... The key to the exciting thriller is the futuristic world of Timothy S. Johnston ... Tanner is terrific as a caring yet kick butt protagonist. With a delightful late twist, readers will appreciate this early twenty-fifth century whodunit and why." And David Feintuch (The Seafort Saga) says of Mr. Johnston, "(His) dialogue and exposition has a snap and impetus that makes me want to read more." THIS IS A TRADE PAPERBACK NOVEL, SIZE 6" X 9" It Could Be Anyone ... An Excerpt from The Furnace “What are your procedures for a situation like this?” the Captain asked in a whisper. “Truthfully? I’ve never been in one.” “Never?” He was incredulous. “Usually I chase a killer when they have a place to run. I’ve never backed one into a corner like this and not known who it is. Most often they make a mistake and I make a capture. In this situation, who knows what he’ll do? His behavior is escalating, there’s no doubt of that.” “Why do you think he’s killing?” I frowned. “I don’t think it’s random. There’s more going on here than three murders.” A beat, and then, “What do you mean?” “I can’t tell you until I know everything. But there is definitely a reason for the killer’s method.” He grew furious. “This is my station, Tanner. I demand to know —” “I can’t tell you. It’s as simple as that.” “Why? Because the Council sent you? Because you’re the best at this job?” “Because frankly, Captain, you could be the killer.” He looked down and saw my hand on my pistol. His jaw dropped. “You’re serious.” “Absolutely.” THIS IS A TRADE PAPERBACK NOVEL, SIZE 6" X 9" Visit www.timothysjohnston.com for more information about Mr. Johnston and to register for news about upcoming novels.
