Randy Rogers: Live at Billy Bob's Texas
Randy Rogers: Live at Billy Bob's Texas
You’re just as likely to spot Randy Rogers in the crowd as you are to see him on stage. He’s an all around fan of music having learned very early what it can do for the soul. His natural ability for "song" brought him solid respect for the art of music producing a passionate believer in honest, straightforward storytelling. Lyrics aside, don’t let your self be fooled into notions of sleepy folk persuasion because the Randy Rogers Band "ain’t no acoustic show." RollerCoaster, the band’s third independent release on Smith Music reveals a Texas-grown band that’s flipped the lid off the independent music vat spewing forth a rich sonic brew. Rogers penned nine of the eleven southern gritty tracks, three of which were co-written with the record’s producer, Radney Foster. Right out of the gate the record was deemed worthy of national kudos when USA Today rated it with three stars saying, "This Texas band’s guitars rock with an authority their Nashville counterparts rarely manage, but the songs on this Radney Foster-produced disc are pure country." Very much the successors of the autonomous music legion, the Randy Rogers Band comes up closely in line with grass-roots icons like Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, and the like. Circa 2005, RRB’s reputation arrives weeks before the actual live concert date harvesting fans by the thousands. The band’s tour schedule has been intensive since the new release taking them across the country and into major radio airplay. The first single "Tonight’s Not The Night" has settled well into mass rotation on country radio placing them on the big daddy of charts, Billboard that is, as well as R&R, Americana and Texas Music charts. The Gruene with Envy Awards have become something of a big daddy event for the Texas music folk. The awards ceremony draws all the top musicians in the area where they are honored to receive awards that are based solely on fan votes. In January RRB swept up the majority of the honors including "Band of the Year," Album of the Year," Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year." It was lucky for Rogers that his initial plans for post adolescence led him in pursuit of a public relations degree at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. It was there that he met and ultimately banded with the RRB counterparts. Musically all band members add their own personal music tastes. Guitarist Geoffrey Hill grew up on a rock diet pretty much exempt of any country music nourishment. Bassist Jon Richardson digested huge helpings of Waylon and Willie. Fiddle player Brady Black came from the bluegrass lineage, and drummer Les Lawless’s influences are still to be determined. Randy Rogers identifies himself just fine on his own. "As for me, my songwriting is as country as country gets. Add in the different flavors of the others and it comes out country rock with a fiddle." Their track record adds up to an admirable amount of units sold starting with the release of Live at Cheatham Street Warehouse in 2000 followed by Like It Used To Be in 2002. Nearly three years since its release, Like It Used to Be still remains on the top seller list on LoneStarMusic.com. Now on board with the William Morris Agency for national booking, the Randy Rogers Band will undoubtedly ride their RollerCoaster to the top.

Richard Gilewitz Live at 2nd Street Theater
Richard Gilewitz Live at 2nd Street Theater
Recorded during a live concert on August 20, 2005, at the 2nd Street Theater in Bend, Oregon, this newest CD is the result of fans asking for not only more music by Richard Gilewitz, but for a recording of his stories and live performances. A look at the song titles will bring to mind familiar tunes that are often included in Richard’s concert performances. However, interspersed among the songs is what makes this 46-minute, 13 track CD live and kicking– those amusing and quirky stories that are always true! The neck snap, throat capo tale relives the adventures of Florida’s heavy metal air guitar champion, while “Walbert, Wigs, and Nope” leaves little room for doubt that Richard is not like the other kids on the block! And true to form, this latest project will not disappoint even those who have attended a number of Richard’s concerts, as once again there is always a surprise around each turn. This time joining Richard is Radim Zenkl, master mandolin player and fellow Breedlove Guitars clinician. Their combined efforts on “Minuet for the Backroads, “The Last Steam Engine Train”, “The Maison Blanche Exit Song”, and “Study in Bm” delighted the crowd that magical evening in Oregon, and will give the listener countless reasons to put this CD in rotation! Here’s what folks are saying about Richard’s performances: “Richard Gilewitz is possibly one of the strangest men in acoustic music today. Much of the charm of a Gilewitz performance is in the stores he tells.” Spectrum “Similar to like-minded souls Jorma Kaukonen, John Fahey and Sandy Bull, Gilewitz’s acoustic magic works best in a live setting.” NASHVILLE/ “Richard Gilewitz has found a superb balance of playing skilled techniques in a wide range of styles in a rousing own signature.” Bridge Guitar Reviews

The Street Sweeper
The Street Sweeper
How breathtakingly close we are to lives that at first seem so far away. From the civil rights struggle in the United States to the Nazi crimes against humanity in Europe, there are more stories than people passing one another every day on the bustling streets of every crowded city. Only some stories survive to become history.Recently released from prison, Lamont Williams, an African American probationary janitor in a Manhattan hospital and father of a little girl he can’t locate, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an elderly patient, a Holocaust survivor who was a prisoner in Auschwitz-Birkenau.A few blocks uptown, historian Adam Zignelik, an untenured Columbia professor, finds both his career and his long-term romantic relationship falling apart. Emerging from the depths of his own personal history, Adam sees, in a promising research topic suggested by an American World War II veteran, the beginnings of something that might just save him professionally, and perhaps even personally. As these men try to survive in early-twenty-first-century New York, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have foreseen. Two very different paths—Lamont’s and Adam’s—lead to one greater story as The Street Sweeper, in dealing with memory, love, guilt, heroism, the extremes of racism and unexpected kindness, spans the twentieth century to the present, and spans the globe from New York to Chicago to Auschwitz.Epic in scope, this is a remarkable feat of storytelling.
