The Morning After: A History of Emergency Contraception in the United States (Critical Issues in Health and Medicine)
Since 2006, when the “morning-after pill” Plan B was first sold over the counter, sales of emergency contraceptives have soared, becoming an $80-million industry in the United States and throughout the Western world. But emergency contraception is nothing new. It has a long and often contentious history as the subject of clashes not only between medical researchers and religious groups, but also between different factions of feminist health advocates. The Morning After tells the story of emergency contraception in America from the 1960s to the present day and, more importantly, it tells the story of the women who have used it. Side-stepping simplistic readings of these women as either radical feminist trailblazers or guinea pigs for the pharmaceutical industry, medical historian Heather Munro Prescott offers a portrait of how ordinary women participated in the development and popularization of emergency contraception, bringing a groundbreaking technology into the mainstream with the potential to alter radically reproductive health practices. Unrequited and Other Stories
Internet dating and the end of the world. Failed relationships and a morning after pill for marriage. Alcoholism and an elf's head mug. These are just a few of the many strange combinations to be found in Unrequited and Other Stories, the first collection of short stories by Kyle Garret. Each of these three stories is different; each exhibits a range in storytelling style and genre, yet each contains a shared sense of longing, a shared pursuit for something good when things are at their worst. There's pessimistic defiance in these stories, a panglossian refusal to let the breakdown have the last word. Sometimes bleak, occasionally chaotic, but always affecting, this collection features a little something for everyone, from romance to horror to dark comedy. In the end, Unrequited and Other Stories is about what we make with what we're given.

The Morning After
A woman is frantic as she awakens in a dark, closed space. From above her comes the muffled sound of cruel laughter, followed by the hard splatter of dirt. Pure terror takes over as she realizes she's being buried alive, and her last breath is a scream that no one but a sadistic killer will hear. To journalist Nikki Gillette, this disturbing story is a ticket out of small - town Savannah and on to the big time. She's already given the killer a nickname - The Grave Robber - and she's spending every minute dogging tough cop Pierce Reed's investigation, trailing him through Savannah's deep thickets and crumbling cemeteries...even though she's starting to wonder about the secrets he's keeping. Another body is found...and another. Each gruesome discovery unnerves Nikki a little more...there's something familiar about it, something she should know. Now, as a serial killer pulls her ever deeper into his sick game, she has no idea how close she's getting to the truth - or how deadly it will be.

Morning After
2010 release from the British Pop band led by Tim Booth. Following the release of its companion, The Night Before, The Morning After has an intuitive, low-key 'campfire' feel and features some of the saddest, darkest lyrics Booth has ever come up with. From bluesy opener, 'Got The Shakes', about an alcoholic guy waking up and realizing he has beaten his wife, through to its closer 'Fear' - Atmospheric, experimental and just a little bit haunted, 'Fear' tackles that dominant inner monologue that stalks the life that's lived too long. With additional highlights including 'Look Away' for the simple reason that it is almost impossible to listen to it without singing along, and 'Tell Her I Said So' about Booth's mother dying in a home, which ironically shows the first signs of light, suddenly embracing disco, employs a childrens' choir and becomes curiously life affirming.

Morning After
A rare Canadian among the R&B elite, Deborah Cox is also notable as one of the few certified divas to write or cowrite her own songs. With her reputation thus established, Cox boldly pushes into a new direction on The Morning After, offering comparatively few ballads as well as two songs aimed straight at the dance floor: the percussive rump-shaker "Up & Down (In & Out)" and the wildly caffeinated "Mr. Lonely." That both appear in myriad remixed versions on an accompanying CD makes Cox's intent clear. Still, fans of the singer's earlier, softer sounds aren't completely shut out. "Hurt So Much" is anguish as a state of mind, while the lush, octave-defying "Play Your Part" puts the passive-aggressive relationship into focus. Sisters get an anthem in "Starting with You," which best captures Cox's overriding messages of affirmation and individuality. Of course, with a voice this boundless and beautiful, Cox could make the white pages sound tingly. That she strives for something more makes The Morning After worth hearing. --Kim Hughes

After the Morning
Championed by Geoff Travis (who discovered The Smiths and manages Pulp and Beth Orton), Cara Dillon has one of the most beautiful voices to emerge from the Celtic scene in recent years. Her latest effort, After The Morning (her first release in the US) establishes her uncanny ability to wed traditional influences to contemporary folk sounds and themes. The album was produced by Sam Lakeman (both were former members of the group The Equation) and features an appearance from Paul Brady on the duet The Streets of Derry. After The Morning’s first single, Never In A Million Years, garnered heavy airplay from BBC2 in the UK, was the single of the week on BBC Radio Ulster and earned Cara a spot at this year’s Cambridge Folk Festival. Dillon is no stranger to success. In 2002 she was nominated for four and walked away with two BBC Awards: Best Traditional Track (for Black is the Colour) & the Horizon (Best Newcomer) Award. In 2004 she was honored with the Irish Meteor Award for Best Female Singer and the Irish Tattler Woman of the Year Music Award. It comes as no surprise that Q Magazine would assert that "...Dillon's vocals, expressive beyond her years, are right on the money." Born in 1975 and raised in Dungiven, Co. Derry, Cara comes from a family steeped in traditional Irish music. At 14 years old she won the acclaimed All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy and from there went on to earn her reputation as an outstanding vocalist with the young Irish band, Oige. In 1995 Cara replaced singer Kate Rusby in the new folk super-group, The Equation. It was as a member of The Equation that Cara’s musical partnership with Equation co-founder Sam Lakeman began, and since the mid-90s when the two left the band that partnership has developed at a rapid pace. Unusually sophisticated and yet completely unpretentious, their music reveals refreshing imagination and considerable flair and it belies the fact that they are both in their early 30s. While Cara Dillon is still relatively unknown on this side of the pond, After The Morning is sure to make her a favorite of North American folk music fans.
