Finding Peace
One of our deepest human desires and needs is to live in peace. We all yearn for peace, but what is it exactly? How do we find it, and how can we bring peace to our lives and our communities? Jean Vanier reflects on recent world events, identifying the sources of conflict and fear within and among individuals, communities, and nations that thwart us in our quest for peace. Peace is not just the work of governments or armies or diplomats, he argues, but the task of each one of us. We can all become makers of peace. We can do our part. And though it's easy to be a love of peace and much more difficult to be a worker for peace, Vanier shows us that ordinary people, unknown and unrecognized, are transforming our world little by little, finding peace in our neighborhoods, and lighting the way to change.

The Miracle the Message the Story: Jean Vanier and L'Arche
In 1964 an extraordinary man started an extraordinary project. Jean Vanier, an ex-naval officer, and son of a Governor General of Canada, bought a little white house in a village north of Paris and invited three men with mental disabilities to share it with him. This was the beginning of l'Arche (The Ark), a special form of community where people who are often rejected and despised by this world can develop their potential to the fullest. Based on many conversations and much time spent with Jean Vanier, Kathryn Spink traces the growth of the l'Arche movement over forty years, and the life and thought of Jean Vanier himself: his childhood in a devout Christian family, his English education, his escape from war-torn France and his historic meeting with Père Thomas, the priest who helped him find his true vocation. Miraculously, there are now over 125 l'Arche communities scattered across the continents. Their message--that the ostensibly poor and weak are potentially a source of life, hope, and peace--is one that has proved to be of relevance to the Church and the world.

A Farther Shore: Ireland's Long Road to Peace
He’s been imprisoned, shot at, denounced, shunned, and banned, yet Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams remains resolute in his belief that peace is the only viable option for the Irish people. Adams led the oldest revolutionary movement in Ireland on an extraordinary journey from armed insurrection to active participation in government. Now he tells the story of the tumultuous series of events that led to the historic Good Friday Agreement as only he can: with a tireless crusader’s conviction and an insider’s penetrating insight. In vivid detail, Adams describes the harrowing attack on his life, and he offers new details about the peace process. We learn of previously undisclosed talks between republicans and the British government, and of conflicts and surprising alliances between key players. Adams reveals details of his discussions with the IRA leadership and tells how republicans differed, “dissidents” emerged, and the first IRA cessation of violence broke down. He recounts meetings in the Clinton White House, tells what roles Irish-Americans and South Africans played in the process, and describes the secret involvement of those within the Catholic Church. Then—triumphantly—this inspiring story climaxes with the Good Friday Agreement: what was agreed and what was promised. Gerry Adams brings a sense of immediacy to this story of hope in what was long considered an intractable conflict. He conveys the acute tensions of the peace process and the ever-present sense of teetering on the brink of both joyous accomplishment and continued despair. With a sharp eye and sensitive ear for the more humorous foibles of political allies and enemies alike, Adams offers illuminating portraits of the leading characters through cease-fires and standoffs, discussions and confrontations. Among the featured players are John Major, Tony Blair, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jean Kennedy Smith, and Nelson Mandela. As the preeminent republican strategist of his generation, Gerry Adams provides the first comprehensive account of the principles and tactics underpinning modern Irish republicanism. And in a world where peace processes are needed more urgently than ever, A Farther Shore provides a template for conflict resolution. From the Hardcover edition.

Jean-Christophe: In Paris (Dodo Press)
Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was a French writer and dramatist, best known as the author of the novel series Jean-Christophe (1904-12). His first book was published in 1902, when he was already 36 years old. Thirteen years later, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. His mind sculpted by a passion for music and discursive admiration for exceptional men, he sought a means of communion among men for his entire life. Through his advocacy for a 'people's theatre', he made a significant contribution towards the democratization of the theatre. Because of his insistence upon justice and his humanist ideal, he looked for peace during and after the First World War in the works of the philosophers of India, then in the new world that the Soviet Union had built. But he would not find peace except in writing his works. He was strongly influenced by the Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism, and authored several books on the subject. His works include: Amour d'Enfants (1888), The Origins of Modern Lyric Theatre (1895), The Wolves (1898) and Musicians of To-Day (1908).

In the Midst of Chaos, Peace
In response to Pope John Paul s recent letter to artists to promote the Catholic faith through artistic evangelization, three well-known names in the field of sacred art have collaborated to produce this beautiful art book filled with visual and spiritual meditations. Sister Wendy Beckett, famed BBC and PBS art critic, presents her always unique meditations for each of the 54 wonderful silhouettes by the two foremost Catholic paper-cutting artists, Dan Paulos and the late Sister Mary Jean Dorcy. The result is what Sister Wendy calls an epiphany, a book that reveals the God of mercy, love and peace through deeply inspired art and reflections. A perfect Christmas gift! Thus, this book and its title, In the Midst of Chaos, Peace, perfectly sum up the intent of the three collaborators: to offer people in our modern, fast-paced and hectic world, spiritual and artistic meditations that take only a minute to ponder but can produce profound and lasting peace of soul. Recommended in Catholic Mosaic Materials Author: Sr. Wendy Beckett Format: 128 pages, Hardcover Publisher: Ignatius Press ISBN: 978-0898707649
