Pictures of the Past
Pictures of the Past is a compelling saga sweeping through Chicago, Paris and Berlin, reliving events from pre-World War II Europe, but beginning in contemporary times. An Impressionist painting, hanging for decades in the Art Institute of Chicago and donated by the charismatic philanthropist Taylor Woodmere, is challenged by an elderly woman as a Nazi theft. Taylor’s gripping and passionate story takes us back to 1937. Sent to Paris on family business, he reluctantly leaves his girlfriend Emily, a spoiled debutante from Newport, Rhode Island. But once in Europe, he immediately falls in love – first with an Henri Lebasque painting, and then with the enchanting Sarah Berger of Berlin. After Taylor returns home, the Berger family becomes trapped in the Nazi web, and any attempts for the new lovers to be reunited are thwarted. Interwoven with this narrative is the story of Rachel Gold, a beautiful and bright Chicago girl caught up in the times of the late 1960’s. Pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend Court Woodmere, Taylor’s son, she moves to New York to live with her aunt, a Holocaust survivor. Years later, as the controversy surrounding the provenance of the painting becomes public, Rachel’s grown son is disturbed by his inexplicable familiarity with the work of art. And it is only Taylor Woodmere who can unravel the complicated puzzle of their lives. With a heart-grabbing ending, Pictures of the Past is historical fiction at its best, giving a personalized window to the powerful events and intriguing venues of the eras. From a world torn by the horrors of war, a love story emerges that endures through years of separation.

Out of the Picture
Quite unlike her fair stepsisters, Lizzie is dark and secretive: "Just like your father," says her mother—but what was her father like? Photos of him are hidden away; snatches of overheard conversation between her mother and her stepfather deepen the mystery. When events propel Lizzie alone to London, she stops wondering and starts searching. Beautifully evoking the ache of childhood loss, the scrappy joys of chaotic families, and the hurt and relief of understanding, Out of the Picture reveals Polly Samson's talent for laying bare the uncomfortable truths that lie just under the skin— in every family, in every secret.

The Politics Of Pictures: The Creation Of The Public In
The Politics of Pictures searches for the public in the realm of media, where citizens are now literally represented on screen and page. John Hartley investigates popular media reality, showing how pictures and texts are powerful political forces in their own right. He embarks on a wide-ranging and sometimes bizarre journey of discovery, using an amazing variety of primary texts to explore the way publics have been created, and the political uses of media audiences. The Politics of Pictures is a history of looking, from Aristotle to TV audiences, from the invention of photography to the meaning of picnics, from Leviathan to synchronized swimming, Dr. Johnson to the sexualization of war. Its unconventional approach is designed to show how popular reality looks to itself, and how its peculiar forms and connections actually challenge some venerable political and philosophical truths.

Pictures Of Paintings
What do paintings signify in an age of photographs? How do photographs modify the visual language of paintings? Richard Misrach's Pictures of Paintings showcases photographs of select museum masterpieces. Working primarily in the art museums of the American West, along with The Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Misrach photographs paintings to reexamine specific details, not so much as a guide to the artist’s style or technique, but as a means of understanding a lexicon of cultural values, among them race, gender, religion, and power. By collapsing the barriers between the traditional practice of documentation and the recent strategies of appropriation art, these photographs raise important questions regarding representation itself. This publication marks the first comprehensive compilation of this significant body of work. Blind Spot Books, a division of Blind Spot Inc. (publisher of the premiere art photography magazine Blind Spot), is now partnering with powerHouse Books to produce elegantly designed, sumptuously produced works of artistic and literary significance. Founding Blind Spot editor and publisher Kim Zorn Caputo will use the same uncompromising production standards and the finest printing available for the series. Each book will be treated as a creative medium that celebrates the integrity of the best in art and literature.

Pictures of the Dead
Pictures of the Dead involves 14 random murders in which the victims had their eyes severed with precision and viciousness. There were no indications of theft or sexual assault but these attacks were of such exactness, brutality, and cunning that the police knew that this could not be the work of a typical psychopath. No, this had to be someone more brilliant and sadistic. Enter Dr. Tyr Domino. The beginning question is: If there is a proven existence of Photographic Memory, is it possible to actually photograph memory? Can we remove a person's eyes and attempt to photograph their past visions? And if we are to remove them: How? Dr. Tyr Domino must know the answer to these questions. He has taken the New York Art Society by storm with his incredible photographs of indescribable visions. Two seasoned police detectives have been relentlessly pursuing this unknown attacker through the corporate and public maze of confusion and terror. Will they become victims of this sadistic madman? All the while, a blind psychic, Kelley Scotto, living far away from the City and the escalating chaos, sculpts the visions that haunt her constant nightmares. These sculptures are the physical manifestations of the photographs that Tyr Domino now reproduces. Can her psychic abilities aid her in ending the violence?

Pictures Of Architecture - Architecture Of Pictures: A
Jacques Herzog and Jeff Wall are among art and architecture's most successful representatives, and Herzog & de Meuron's architecture in the art domain (e.g. Tate Modern, London) has, since the 70s, attracted particular attention. Wall, for his part, has repeatedly in his motifs sought dialogue with architecture. His photography of Herzog & de Meuron's "Dominus Winery? (1999) in California represents the point of departure for a discussion on the relationship between art and photography. Questions arise as a result on topics such as "photogenic architecture?, the construction of pictures and buildings, and the time factor.

Pictures of Walls
Graffiti is like boxing. The people who do it "professionally" tend to go round in circles pulling the same old moves all the time. The real entertainment takes place on amateur night. That's when you get to watch the bitter and twisted unleash all their pent-up frustrations on an unsuspecting public in a desperate attempt to make some kind of point before collapsing under a cloud of their own bloodied spit. This little book is a charming collection of graffiti from around the world as collected on the site picturesofwalls.com. Very funny indeed. Edited by Banksy. Color.

Pictures of Prayer
We all have a picture-or perhaps many pictures-of what prayer is. Sometimes what we imagine prayer to be only brings us guilt and frustration and so we just give up. Pictures of Prayer will help us re-examine and re-frame our mental pictures of what we have thought prayer is supposed to be. In this devotional the author shares several pictures-some that we would easily identify as prayer pictures and some that may surprise us and cause us to question. She invites us to step outside the familiar, "religious", "churchy" ideas we have and to discover how to have real conversation with the God who created us. Dare to be real as you spend time in prayer. Imagine prayer that makes a difference in your life and in the lives of others. Perhaps you will discover a refreshing, re-energized prayer life that is, in fact, meaningful conversation with your Heavenly Father. Cheryl Martin is a Bible teacher and prayer leader in her local church and a volunteer hospital chaplain. She and her husband, Tim, have been married 43 years, and together they have led a class of adult learners at Crossroads Church of God for several years. They live near their hometown of Lima, Ohio and have two adults children who have married and given them nine grandchildren.

Pictures of Life
It’s entirely too hard to explain…the feeling of losing another member of your already too small family. It comes quick and merciless like lightning, literally, and the lives of Thornton twins Matty and Jenna and their younger brother Kelly are altered for good. Left homeless and completely on their own, the three kids are forced to stick together no matter the circumstances, even if it means bending the law a little and having an unstable cop with a point to prove after them. Lucky for them, his wayward son Andy, looking for a life of music and freedom, sees the kids as a gateway to achieving this dream. Getting back at his father and helping the kids at the same time, Andy hides them away, but four people in the woods behind a beach with little resources can only survive so long, especially against the blood thirsty “cocky cop”. When the guns come out and family ties are forgotten, the Thorntons risk losing everything they have left, even their lives.
