The Main Stream with Roy Blount Jr.
Beloved humorist and celebrated author Roy Blount Jr. takes us on an offbeat journey down the Mississippi River in this poignant and amusing travelogue along the great river that Mark Twain immortalized over a century ago. Blount is our natural choice for river guide as he brings his own unique brand of wit and wisdom to capture the many eccentricities of contemporary American life. In the affectionately irreverent spirit of Roger Weisberg's previous film Road Scholar Blount introduces a cast of unforgettable characters along this great liquid divide -- the literal main stream of America. From a gay Newlywed game at Minnesota's Mall of America to a rodeo at America's toughest prison in Angola Louisiana Blount boldly throws himself into each new encounter. Following a heated stone-skipping contest with renowned humorist and storyteller Garrison Keillor we meed a French chef who touts swamp rats as a culinary delicacy an award-winning newspaper editor serving a life sentence for murder the founder and curator of the "Elvis is Alive" museum and dozens of other truly unique personalities who champion beliefs and lifestyles that fall outside of mainstream culture. A true celebration of diversity eccentricity and the freedom of expression Blount ultimately discovers that America is not nearly as homogeneous as he previously had feared. Insomnia WS; With Movie Cash Blu-ray Disc
In a remote Alaskan town called Nightmute the murder of a teenage girl has shocked the tight-knit community. The Los Angeles Police Department sends two of its cops--both under investigation by Internal Affairs--to try to solve the crime in Christopher Nolan's film based on Erik Skjoldbjrg's 1997 Norwegian film starring Stellan Skarsgrd. The experienced weathered Will Dormer Al Pacino has nothing in life except for the force. His younger partner Hap Martin Donovan has a family to support and is willing to turn state's evidence to protect them. Local cop Ellie Burr is excited to work with her hero Dormer--until she starts uncovering some questionable situations. It isn't long before Dormer finds the murderer--writer Walter Finch played with subtle nuances by Robin Williams--but Finch knows a secret that could bring Dormer down. Director Nolan who stunned audiences with 2001's inventive MEMENTO here crafts an atmospheric psychological thriller that is bathed in whites and grays. The acting is uniformly excellent especially Pacino's performance as a cop on the edge and Williams as a soft-spoken low-rent crime novelist. Because it never gets dark in Alaska at this time of year Dormer a play off the Spanish word "dormir" which means "to sleep" is unable to fall asleep light always streaming into his hotel room; watching him slowly unravel is a treat.

Miss Representation
Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, "Miss Representation" (TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3 percent of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65 percent of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.
