A decade before his postmodern romp Moulin Rouge brought the film musical high-kicking and (occasionally) screaming into the 21st century, director Baz Luhrmann debuted his oft-dizzying transgenre musical tack in this, his film debut. Set against the obsessive world of Australian dance competitions, the first of what's become known as Luhrmann's "Red Curtain Trilogy" (which also includes Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge) stands hoary Hollywood clichés on their head. The music is an irresistibly tipsy cocktail that mixes orchestral contributions by Australian film composer David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth) with the songs of Aussie pop writing/performing/producing legends Harry Vanda and George Young (the Easybeats, Flash and the Pan, AC/DC, and others) and dashes of everything from chugging Latin rhythms to Cyndi Lauper. Trading on Moulin's reputation and popularity, this upgraded edition features an expanded track listing that now includes "London Derriere," Hirschfelder's loopy/schmaltzy take on "Danny Boy," exotica conductor Stanley Black's infectious "Os Quindins de Ya Ya," and bandleader Jack Hilton's vintage romp through the standard "Happy Feet." --Jerry McCulley

While the plot of this Australian film may seem a bit familiar ("The Ugly Duckling" meets "Dirty Dancing"), the whimsical tone and superb dance sequences will make you forget the movie's predictability. Scott (Paul Mercurio) is a champion ballroom dancer who wants to dance "his own steps." Fran is the homely, beginning dancer who convinces Scott that he should dance his own steps... with her. Complicating matters are Scott's domineering mother (Pat Thompson), a former dancer herself, who wants her son to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championship (the same contest she lost years ago), and a conniving dance committee that is determined that "there are no new steps!" The dancing is enjoyable, yet not overwhelming, and the movie strives hard not to take itself too seriously (the beginning of the film is even styled as a pseudo-documentary). "Strictly Ballroom," while not so subtly imparting its moral ("A life lived in fear is a life half-lived"), is a laughable romp that's sure to be a crowd pleaser. "--Jenny Brown"
