The Hustler
To Fast Eddie Felsen, a young pool hustler, there was only one thing that mattered: to make the big time and the big money in the world of pool by beating the best in the country. Hustling suckers in small towns for good stake money was practice for his goal and when he felt ready he went to Bennington's pool hall in Chicago to look for Minnesota Fats. Eddie and Fats pit nerve against skill in a fantastic match over an unbroken thirty-six hours. This contest shows Eddie some things he did not know about guts, stamina and 'character' - the difference between winners and losers, and it proves a hard and painful lesson to learn. It takes an interlude with Sarah, an alcoholic student and a born loser, to give the lesson meaning, and the shrewd advice and backing of Bert, a professional gambler, to put it into practice. Bert knows that talent without character is nothing and stakes Eddie to a climactic return match for all or nothing. When it is over, Eddie knows a great deal more about big-time pool, about money, and about himself. In beating Fats he has become the best in the country.

The Hustler's Handbook
What is the difference between a promoter and a hustler?" Bill Veeck asks. "Well, let's look at it this way. Neither one of them is an advertiser. An advertiser pays for his space. A promoter works out a quid pro quo . A hustler gets a free ride and makes it seem as if he's doing you a favor." Keep this in mind as Veeck, one of baseball's all–time characters and certainly its best–ever hustler, draws on an apparently bottomless well of stories, anecdotes, theories, and attitudes involving the often bizarre world of major league baseball. And, of course, he's never afraid to speak his mind. The Hustler's Handbook is a rich, hilarious, flagrantly outspoken lesson on how to operate as a hustler in the corporate jungle of modern baseball.

Game Over: The Rise and Transformation of a Harlem Hustler
A cautionary tale about the life of former kingpin Azie Faison, who has become the fabric of street legend Faison was a ninth grade dropout who earned more than $100,000 a week selling cocaine in Harlem, New York, during the peak of America's "War on Drugs" between 1983 and 1990. Faison, along with two partners, was an urban prince with cars, jewels, and people -- in awe of this million-dollar phenomenon -- at his feet. His legacy has been praised by hip-hop's top names in their lyrics, and his life was the basis for the urban cult classic film "Paid in Full" starring Mekhi Phifer, Wood Harris, and rapper Cam'ron and produced by Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Films. In "Game Over," Azie brings forth a powerful memoir of New York's perilous drug underworld and music industry, with an intellect and wisdom to empower and challenge the street culture he knows so very well.

The Hustlers: Gambling, Greed and the Perfect Con
Invitations to John Aspinall and John Burke's illegal gambling parties were the most sought after in 1950s London—only the wealthy and well-connected were allowed past their door. When the police finally arrested them, Aspinall and Burke challenged the law—and won. As a result, gambling was legalized and crime boss Billy Hill and his lieutenant Bobby McKew took notice. Clubs sprang up everywhere and Billy had a foolproof way of fixing the cards. He also had his eye on the ultimate prize, Aspinall's exclusive new club, The Clermont . . . Revealing for the first time how Aspinall and Hill plotted to steal a fortune, based on testimony from Burke and McKew, The Hustlers is a riotous journey back to 50s and 60s London. With a cast of characters that ranges from safecracker Eddie Chapman to the reckless Earl of Derby, from croupier Louis the Rat to unlucky Lord Lucan, it vividly recreates the exploits of the gamblers and gangsters whose lives collided in the clubs and pubs of Mayfair.

Pool Hustler and Gambler: A True Life Story of a Pool Hustler and Gambler
I was born four months premature, was shot in the head (I once very stupidly decided to whack one of my dad’s rifle shells with a hammer and when it went off, it grazed the side of my head) and was shot in the wrist when a neighbor boy’s .22 went off in my direction. In addition, I was cut with a knife during a fight and was involved in a horrific car wreck, all before I turned 21! I have been ranked as a semi-pro pool player. I have played in pool leagues such as the APA for over 10 years and have been ranked as a 6-7 handicap in 8-ball and a 7-8 handicap in the 9-ball leagues. I stand six feet tall and weigh in the 220s and have a second-degree black belt in the martial arts. I have studied several of the variations of the martial arts such as Japanese, Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, Orange Sash Kung Fu, Iaido, Kendo, Bushido, Modern Arnis and Aikido. I have won the North American karate championships in my division in all three areas, including Kumite (the art of fighting) and Kata, along with Weapons. I am very proficient in the Samurai sword, Nunchukas, Sai and the BoStaff. I have been a truck driver for most of my life. I enjoy the open road and a job where they tell you where you have to go and when you have to be there and then you are left alone as long as you get your job done! If you want to take several naps along the way, take a long lunch or dinner, or just stop and see some sights, you can, just as long as you get your load where it has to be when it has to be there! Show me any other job with all these benefits and paychecks and I’ll give it a try!

Women Street Hustlers: Who They Are and How They Survive
While the number of women in U.S. jails remains low in comparison with the number of men, over the past 10 years their admission rate has soared and now surpasses the rate of increase for men. While demographic information is available on these women, it tells us little about who they are as people, how they become repeat offenders, or how they survive on the street. Barbara A. Rockell sheds light on these issues in a fascinating and empathic study of female repeat offenders admitted to a New York state jail. Despite the women's self-defeating behaviors, many of them reveal a surprising degree of initiative and self-sufficiency. This finding runs counter to previous research in which drug use and criminal activity by women have been viewed as reflecting the perpetrators' victim status and lack of agency. The author argues for seeing these behaviors in a broader social context and suggests avenues for future study, as well as more humane and constructive intervention strategies.

Snake Oil, Hustlers and Hambones: The American Medicine Show
Long before television and radio commercials beckoned to potential buyers, the medicine show provided free entertainment and promised cures for everything from corns to cancer. Combining elements of the circus, theater, vaudeville, and good old-fashioned entrepreneurship, the showmen of the American medicine show sold tonics, ointments, pills, extracts and a host of other "wonder-cures," guaranteed to "cure what ails you." While the cures were seldom miraculous, the medicine show was an important part of American culture and of performance history. Harry Houdini, Buster Keaton, and P.T. Barnum all took a turn upon the medicine show stage. This study of the medicine show phenomenon surveys nineteenth century popular entertainment and provides insight into the ways in which show business, advertising, and medicine manufacture developed in concert. The colorful world of the medicine show, with its Wild West shows, pie-eating contests, clowns, and menageries, is fully explored. Photographs of performers and of the fascinating handbills and posters used to promote the medicine show are included.

Players: Con Men, Hustlers, Gamblers, and Scam Artists
Once I hear the clatter of chips I almost go into convulsions," said Dostoyevsky, while Anatole France wrote, "The gambler is driven by the fascination of danger at the bottom of all great passions." The characters the reader meets in Players—chess grand masters, poolroom hustlers, or street-hardened practitioners of the short con—are all alike propelled by the ecstasy of risk. "The stake is money," France wrote, "in other words, immediate, infinite possibilities." In fact, as the reader hooks up with David Mamet in the poker room and meets Damon Runyon's Bookie Bob, Saul Bellow's immortal Yellow Kid, and learns from Herbert Asbury about the antics of Izzy and Moe, and from David Maurer about the discreet charm of the confidence man, Walter Tevis on Fast Eddie Felson and Minnesota Fats on the seductions of nineteenth-century gambling dens, high lives and low will merge and the world of gambler and con-artist will blur. Selected writings by Jorge Luis Borges, Hunter S. Thompson, Nick Tosches, and many others are featured.
