What happens when a small town Montana woman decides to jump without a net, into a new life in tropical paradise and a foreign world of unknown parameters? It’s surprising, it’s scary and it’s a whole lot of fun! I’m Lisa Valencia and I took that leap. My book, “If She Can Do It, So Can I !” chronicles two years of personal experience and gives an unbiased, insiders view of what it’s really like in Costa Rica. (134 PAGES, 86 FULL COLOR PHOTOS)        This compelling and informative book begins with ambivalent feelings about leaving and moving to Costa Rica. But my enthusiasm for the future outweighs an attachment to the past and I lunge forward learning Spanish, maneuvering through San Jose and finally making my way out to the Caribbean to build a life of my own creative design.        I tell of my triumphs and I spare you no tears in an effort to be genuine and give a clear picture of Costa Rica culture and living. Intermixed in my adventures is good, common sense information – Costa Rica facts you can learn only by living here – such as where to go, what to avoid, cultural counsel and how to make the most of your time in this magical place. With my experience as your guide you’ll discover the essential information for anyone interested in Costa Rica. But more entertaining than a guide book, this book recounts amusing mishaps learning a new language, the disconcerting feeling of always having to watch your back, internal questions aroused by the challenges of going it alone and so much more. My book will give you a head start on your way to Costa Rica and soon you’ll be thinking, “If she can do it, so can I.”

Singer/songwriter Matt Costa's self-titled 2013 album follows up his '60s pop-inflected 2010 effort, Mobile Chateau. Where his previous album found the often Anglophile-leaning artist imbuing his melodic pop with a kind of low-key psychedelia, here Costa keeps the old-school vibe going, but colors it with a softer, often '70s AM pop radio approach. That means we get a bit of country twang, some juicy organ sounds, and lots of shiny string and horn parts throughout the album. Cuts like rambling opener Loving You and the sparkling Shotgun bring together a mix of T. Rex's glitter rock and the pre-disco-era orchestral pop of Electric Light Orchestra. Elsewhere, the late-afternoon melancholy of Early November and the equally as ruminative folk-inflected Laura Lee, with their gold dust-covered vinyl aesthetic, sound like long lost Donovan songs. However, Costa is not merely a retro stylist; his songs are always personal, yet universally relatable with evocative, poetic lyrics that seem to come from a place deep in his soul. On Shotgun he sings I tried to find my own way in the books that I read/Found all my favorite authors, they're dead/Sometimes in your life you're gonna walk in a room/Everyone's invited but you. But perhaps Costa sums up the album's appeal best on Loving You, as he croons Loving you is not hard to do/We're always gonna make it through/You've got my attention/Here's my affection for you. With Matt Costa, Costa definitely has our attention and earns our affection. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
