Of all the boundary-pushing underground hip-hop acts who emerged in the late '90s, Company Flow was easily among the hardest and least compromising, spinning highly technical rhymes over buzzing, lo-fi beats with virtually no concessions to melody or polish. It comes as no surprise that onetime Company Flow leader El-P's solo debut, Fantastic Damage, takes a similar approach -- yet it's a logical and distinct progression from the sound that made Company Flow such seminal figures in underground rap. Fantastic Damage is even more aggressive and confrontational in its approach, and this time out, El-P himself is solely responsible for the sonic backdrop, producing the entire record by himself. If the production sounds a little fuller than Company Flow's essential Funcrusher Plus, it's likely because in many places, El-P has fleshed out his scuzzy, banging, stop-start percussion tracks with abrasive, distorted noise, which sounds like nothing so much as the furies unleashed. There are also plenty of tinny, blooping vintage synths that lend the music a cold, inhuman air -- and that's no doubt intentional, because Fantastic Damage paints a chilling portrait of contemporary society that's so bleak it often crosses into the apocalyptic. The music makes El-P's paranoid totalitarian nightmares totally convincing, not just because of its sheer wallop, but also in the subtler details that emerge with repeated listens -- the bizarre sound snippets and ghostly washes that seem to teeter on the edge of madness. Throughout the record, El-P proves he's one of the most technically gifted MCs of his time, spitting out near-impossible phrases and rhythmic variations that simply leave the listener's head spinning. Accessible it isn't, but Fantastic Damage constitutes some of the most challenging, lyrically dense hip-hop around, assembled by one of the genre's true independent mavericks. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

The debut solo album from El-P, Fantastic Damage finds the rap firebrand expanding on the confrontational themes that have characterized his career to date. As the guiding influence of influential hip-hop trio Company Flow, founder of the indie label Def Jux, and producer for Cannibal Ox's outstanding apocalyptic rap work The Cold Vein, El-P has become synonymous with the new breed of left-field hip-hoppers. But Fantastic Damage is quite possibly his most extreme statement yet: a sprawling magnum opus of broiling anger and dysfunctional angst, expressed through his abrasive production techniques and satirical rhymes. In spirit, the music echoes the revolutionary squall of the Bomb Squad, while not actually sounding like it: the blistering funk of Deep Space 9mm boasts a more syrupy feel than Public Enemy's tight jams, while Dead Disnee has more in common with the modern wave of laptop-wielding electronica artists than any traditional rap groove. Rhyme-wise, too, this is a bleak work, as El-P envisions apocalyptic futures (Stepfather Factory) and waxes unprintable about his former record label (Deep Space 9mm). At 70 minutes, it's on the long side, but anyone acquainted with El-P's earlier work should lap this up. --Louis Pattison

Hip-hop producer Lee Bannon is all over the place on this glorious mess of a record. He's treading the dangerous line that separates self-indulgence (think of DJ Spooky's more pretentious excursions) from brilliant experimentalism, and he mostly stays on the right side of it, but mess is still the word that comes most frequently to mind over the course of Fantastic Plastic's 37 minutes. What is constant (more or less) is the thread of head-nodding beats: even when Bannon is pulling seemingly random sounds from the crates and from the ether, the beats are consistently both present and funky. There are junglistic gestures (note the title track, which briefly features hard-edged rapper Yu of Diamond District, as well as the frenetically glitchy intro to Search & Destroy), moments of jazzy abstraction (Phone Drone), and nods to vintage funk (Space Glide, The Noise in Color). Guest MCs range from familiar and well-established names like Del tha Funky Homosapien and Inspectah Deck to less famous artists like Poor and Chuwee, and all of them acquit themselves nicely. But the central figure in Bannon's soundscape is his sampler: everywhere are random-sounding piles of sonic detritus taken from old vinyl recordings of dance orchestras and jazz combos, telephone conversations, and even police scanners (the slightly hair-raising Scan). By the end of the album you'll be slightly exhausted, but it's worth the effort. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
