Developed by the same Firebrand Games team that gave players Race Driver: Create & Race, Grid expands on the grand-touring racing that typifies Codemasters' Race Driver series. Handheld gamers can still drive flashy sports cars around European circuits like Spa and the Nurburgring, but now they can also drift through the streets of Japan, speed downhill in Togue events, and careen through San Francisco and Washington D.C. in American muscle cars. Dedicated drivers can compete in events and championships in the career mode, while gamers looking for a quicker race experience can try time trials, speed tests, and chase events.

The DS version of Grid employs an updated version of the Create and Race track editor, featuring more than 60 individual track pieces and the ability to make customized fences and billboards. Players can use the free-draw tool to design a course or put together an entire championship circuit, then share up to four custom tracks online. Other online options include four-player races, global leader boards, and Grid servers for uploading and downloading custom courses.
