The third Madden football game on Nintendo DS continues the twin-screen viewpoint of its predecessors while updating both team and player statistics for the 2006 season. For the first time in the series, the gameplay unfolds on the touch screen as users lead their favorite team's 3D athletes across the gridiron. The top screen includes the familiar overhead view of the field, with large Xs and Os representing players for a bird's-eye look at the action.

For this 2006 release, the developers have upped the resolution and tweaked the visuals to account for variations in position size, time of day, and even weather. The touch-screen interface has also undergone a few revisions, with new onscreen buttons that can be tapped with a finger instead of requiring a stylus. Wide receiver hot routes can be drawn on the lower screen as well, and the handheld's microphone is used for calling audibles.
