New World Order is a touching, moving comeback from Curtis Mayfield. As the first new music Mayfield recorded since he was paralyzed in 1990, the album engenders a lot of goodwill -- it's undeniably affecting to hear him sing again, especially with the knowledge that his performances had to be recorded line by line, due to his paralysis. The joy of hearing him sing makes the inconsistency of the album forgivable, especially since he is in good voice. Narada Michael Walden, Daryl Simmons, and Organized Noize all contributed productions that are sensitive but strong, which gives the album added weight. The songs are hit-and-miss, but the main strength of the record is that it illustrates that Mayfield can make music that is still vital. ~ Leo Stanley, Rovi

Claire Lynch is blessed with sort of voice that's practically perfect for bluegrass -- high and clear, but with enough force to express a wealth of emotion and a sense of drama that never overplays its hand or feels like grand-standing. Lynch's admirable willingness to put her personal life and the needs of her family ahead of her career, however, means she doesn't get into the studio as often as some of her peers, and 2006's New Day is the first new music from Lynch since Lovelight in 2000. Growing up in Ohio in the 1970s, photographer Marc Joseph was first exposed to art, writing and music in the eccentric smaller book and record shops of downtown Cleveland. Most Saturday afternoons were spent combing through the stacks in anticipation of a major future purchase--like his first, London Calling by the Clash--or studying certain talismanic book covers like George Orwell's Animal Farm or Allen Ginsberg's Howl. This was the beginning of Joseph's permanent fascination with books and records--both as public artworks and as formative private experiences.
