The book, aimed at children (and adults) of all ages, contains eight short stories of the exploits of two dogs, Sam and Sophie who live in the Yorkshire countryside. Sophie is the smaller of the two dogs, is very placid and is of course liked by everyone she comes in contact with. Sam on the other hand is much larger both in physical structure and life. He is often considered a pest, but his heart is in the right place. He is also very brave and readily offers assistance to others. The stories take the reader through various adventures that the two friends undertake and incorporate many other animals ranging from birds to soldier ants and even a hermit crab. Each animal/bird has a name which usually corresponds with the first initial of the name of his kind, for example, Frank the fox, Paul the pigeon, and so on. The only exception to this is Kevin the crow who features in many of the stories.
