District 9
This science fiction thriller, directed by Neill Blomkamp, is nominated for Best Picture, Film Editing, Visual Effects, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). District 9 centers on a bureaucrat assigned to relocate a race of extraterrestrial creatures to an internment camp outside the city. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 explores themes of xenophobia and social segregation, and is based on events that took place in Cape Town during the apartheid era.
